Ducks surprise Buckeyes in Columbus
UNDATED (AP) — No. 12 Oregon has put itself in the conversation of serious CFP contenders after knocking off one of last season’s semifinalists.
Third-ranked Ohio State was a 14 1/2-point favorite at home before C.J. Verdell ran for 161 yards and had three touchdowns to lead the Ducks to a 35-28 win over the Buckeyes. Three plays into the second half, Verdell blasted through the middle untouched and outran defensive backs for a 77-yard score, putting Oregon ahead, 21-7. That was part of a Ducks running attack that racked up 269 yards.
Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud passed for 472 yards and three touchdowns. He had a chance to engineer a tying drive before throwing his only interception of the day, picked off by Verone McKinley III at the Oregon 35 with 2:50 remaining.
The 2-0 Ducks were without star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and linebacker Justin Flowe.
It was Ohio State’s first regular-season loss since October 2018.

— Bryce Young threw for three TDs and Jase McClellan scored three times to help fuel No. 1 Alabama’s 48-14 rout of FCS Mercer. Young completed 19 of 27 passes for 227 yards after coming out slow in just his second game as the Crimson Tide starter.
— Stetson Bennett tied a school record with five touchdown passes filling in for injured starter JT Daniels, leading second-ranked Georgia to a 56-7 rout of UAB. Bennett completed his first six passes, with four going all the way to the end zone for the Bulldogs.
— Fourth-ranked Oklahoma destroyed Western Carolina, 76-0 as Spencer Rattler threw five touchdown passes before taking a seat in the second half. Rattler completed 20 of 26 passes for 243 yards in the Sooners’ 10th win in a row.
— Fifth-ranked Texas A&M escaped with a 10-7 win at Colorado as backup quarterback Zach Calzada threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Spiller with 2:41 remaining. The Buffs had a chance to pull off their first win over a top-five team in 14 years when Joshka Gustav forced a fumble inches from the goal line to end an Aggies scoring threat, but Colorado immediately went three-and-out midway through the fourth quarter.
— D.J. Uiagalelei (oo-eye-gah-LEH’-lay) ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as No. 6 Clemson hammered South Carolina State 49-3. The Tigers had touchdowns on all four of their first-quarter possessions and rebounded from last weekend’s 10-3 loss to Georgia.
— Seventh-ranked Cincinnati posted a 42-7 win over Murray State as Jerome Ford rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns. Desmond Ridder passed for 243 yards and two TDs for the Bearcats, who trailed 7-0 in the second quarter and were outgained, 190-83 in the first half.
— Notre Dame survived an upset bid by Toledo as Jack Coan hit Michael Mayer for an 18-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 remaining to give the eighth-ranked Irish a 32-29 win over the Rockets. Coan shared playing time with true freshman Tyler Buchner, who tossed a 55-yard TD pass to Chris Tyree that gave the Fighting Irish a 24-16 lead with 10:57 to play.
— Jack Campbell returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown and No. 10 Iowa ran its winning streak against No. 9 Iowa State to six games with a 27-17 victory. The Hawkeyes turned four takeaways into 20 points, ran its overall winning streak to eight games and its winning streak against ranked teams to five.
— Sean Clifford completed 21 of 29 passes for 230 yards, ran for a touchdown and threw for another to lead No. 11 Penn State over Ball State 44-13 on Saturday. Linebacker Jesse Luketa returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown and Jordan Stout kicked three field goals for the Nittany Lions.
— Emory Jones threw a 35-yard TD pass to Xzavier Henderson and scored on a 33-yard run on the way to a 35-3 in 13th-ranked Florida’s 42-20 rout of overmatched South Florida. Backup Anthony Richardson finished 3 of 3 for 152 yards, two TDs and a 745.6 rating that will be difficult for coach Dan Mullen to ignore with top-ranked and defending champion Alabama visiting The Swamp next Saturday.
— Stanford was a 42-28 winner against No. 14 Southern Cal as Tanner McKee passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another score in his first collegiate start. Nathaniel Peat had an 87-yard touchdown run while racking up a career-high 115 yards to help the Cardinals bounce back from a season-opening loss.
— Arkansas ran for 333 yards and four touchdowns while its defense stuffed No. 15 Texas in a dominating 40-21 win. The Longhorns’ 256 yards of total offense are its lowest since 2015.
— Chez Mellusi ran for 144 yards and a score in leading No. 18 Wisconsin to a 37-7 victory over Eastern Michigan. The Badgers piled up 352 yards rushing and held Eastern Michigan to 92 total yards and three first downs.
— Raheem Blackshear rushed for two consecutive touchdowns in the second half to put 19th-ranked Virginia Tech in control before the Hokies completed a 35-14 victory over Middle Tennessee. Braxton Burmeister threw for 142 yards and a score for Virginia Tech, which finished with 375 yards.
— Matt Corral threw four of his five scoring strikes in the first half of No. 20 Mississippi’s 54-17 dismantling of FCS member Austin Peay. Ole Miss added a defensive touchdown on a strip sack and 33-yard fumble return from defensive end Sam Williams and a safety from the special teams.
— Jaren Hall threw three touchdown passes and totaled 241 yards of offense, helping BYU defeat No. 21 Utah, 23-17.
— D’Eriq (dee-EH’-rihk) King threw for 200 yards and rushed for 67 more, but No. 22 Miami needed a 43-yard field goal with 2:04 remaining for a 25-23 win over Appalachian State.
— Quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for a career-high 122 yards and Rachaad White chipped in with a pair of rushing TDs in No. 23 Arizona State ‘s 37-10 dumping of UNLV.
— Sam Howell provided three touchdowns through the air and two on the ground for No. 24 North Carolina in a 59-17 laugher against Georgia State.
— Demetris Robertson scored three touchdowns and Jarquez Hunter rushed for 147 yards as No. 25 Auburn raced past FCS program Alabama State, 62-0.

Raducanu takes Open crown
NEW YORK (AP) — British teenager Emma Raducanu (rad-oo-CAN’-oo) has successfully completed her unexpected run to the U.S. Open women’s championship.
The 18-year-old qualifier is a Grand Slam champion for the first time following an impressive 6-4, 6-3 win over 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez. Raducanu entered ranked 150th before becoming the first woman to win the U.S. Open title without dropping a set since Serena Williams in 2014. She did so after capturing three straight qualifying matches, winning just the second major championship she’s entered.
Raducanu was serving for the match when she slid on the court chasing a ball to her backhand side, bloodying her left knee. A trainer bandaged the cut during a delay of more than four minutes. When they resumed, Raducanu saved a pair of break points, then converted on her third chance to close it with a 108 mph ace.
Raducanu is the first British woman to win a Grand Slam trophy since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.
This was the first Grand Slam final between teenagers since Serena Williams defeated Martina Hingis in the 1999 U.S. Open.

Brewers toss record-setting no-no
UNDATED (AP) — This Major League Baseball season has produced more no-hitters in any one year since pitchers began to throw overhand in 1884.
The Milwaukee Brewers have authored the ninth no-hitter of the season as Corbin Burnes combined with reliever Josh Hader to lead a 3-0 shutout of the Indians. Burnes struck out 14 with 115 pitches over eight innings, taking a perfect game into the seventh while overpowering the Indians.
Burnes fanned 11 of his first 14 hitters and retiring the first 18 in order before Myles Straw walked leading off the seventh.
It’s the third time the Indians have been no-hit this season, not including the seven-inning no-no thrown against them by Tampa Bay.
In other major league action:
— The Giants picked up their sixth straight win by blasting the Cubs, 15-4. Tommy La Stella was 3-for-6 with five RBIs and three runs scored, including a three-run blast in a six-run fifth. Brandon Belt also smacked a three-run homer while San Francisco scored five in the second.
— Mookie Betts smacked a tiebreaking, three-run homer with two outs in the fifth inning to send the Dodgers past the Padres, 5-4. Walker Buehler (BYOO-lur) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings for his 14th win, helping Los Angeles stay 2 1/2 games behind the Giants for the NL West lead.
— The Braves’ lead in the NL East is down to 3 ½ games over the Phillies following Atlanta’s 6-4 loss to Miami. The game was tied 3-3 until Bryan De La Cruz and Jesús Sánchez hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning against Richard Rodríguez.
— The Phillies ended their four-game skid as Bryce Harper banged out his 31st homer and Zack Wheeler pitched into the seventh inning of their 6-1 win against Colorado. Wheeler struck out eight and allowed a run and four hits over 6 2/3 innings to win his third consecutive start.
— The Yankees ended their seven-game losing streak by rallying past the Mets, 8-7 on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Aaron Judge tied it with his second homer of the game in the eighth inning, a few batters before Mets infielder Javier Báez committed an error that brought home the go-ahead run.
— Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer in the eighth and had three RBIs to send the Cardinals past the Reds, 6-4. Paul DeJong had a solo shot in the Redbirds’ third win in four games.
— Joey Wendle tripled and homered in the Rays’ first win in three games, 7-2 over the Tigers. Kevin Kiermaier doubled and tripled in support of 30-year-old Dietrich Enns, who struck out six in four hitless innings of relief for his first big league victory.
— Travis Shaw slammed a three-run homer in the third inning and delivered the tiebreaking single in the 10th inning to send the Red Sox past the White Sox, 9-8. The AL Central-leading White Sox tied it with five runs in the fourth and took an 8-7 lead in the fifth when Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH’-nee grahn-DAHL’) homered.
— George Springer belted a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh and final inning to give the Blue Jays an 11-10 victory over the Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 43rd home run of the season for Toronto, which also received round-trippers from Lourdes Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) Jr. and Danny Jansen in winning for the ninth time in 10 games.
— The Jays completed the sweep as Bo Bichette (bih-SHEHT’) and Alejandro Kirk hit a pair of two-run homers in an 11-run seventh that highlighted an 11-2 romp in Baltimore. Marcus Semien and Teoscar Hernández added three-run shots and Toronto tied single-inning team records with 11 runs, 11 hits and four homers.
— Jonah Heim hit a two-run home run with two out in the eighth to cap a five-run rally in the Rangers’ 8-6 win over the Athletics. DJ Peters hit a two-run shot and Yohel Pozo added an RBI double off Sergio Romo before Heim’s homer on an 0-2 pitch from Andrew Chafin.
— The Rangers picked up a 4-2 win over the AL West-leading Astros behind Luis Rengifo’s (rehn-HEE’-fohz) two-run homer and three RBIs. Angels starter Jose Suarez permitted three hits and a run while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings.
— The Diamondbacks ended a six-game skid as Daulton Varsho provided a two-run homer and a two-run double to lead a 7-3 decision over the Mariners. Humberto Castellanos picked up the win despite serving up Mitch Haniger’s home run two batters into the game.
— Jorge Polanco hit two of Minnesota’s five home runs in a 9-2 drubbing of the Royals. Byron Buxton, Nick Gordon and Max Kepler also went deep to back Michael Pineda (pih-NAY’-dah), who pitched five strong innings in his return to the rotation.
— Bryan Reynolds belted his 23rd home run of the season and drove in three runs as the Pirates surged past the Nationals, 10-7. Reynolds hit a two-run shot to right-center field in the fifth and gave Pittsburgh the lead in the sixth when he worked a bases-loaded walk.

Caleb Smith suspension sticks
UNDATED (AP) — Diamondbacks pitcher Caleb Smith has lost his appeal and will serve a 10-day suspension for the use of a foreign substance in a game.
Smith is the second major league pitcher to serve a suspension under umpires’ increased emphasis on enforcing the banned-substance rules. He was ejected in the eighth inning of a game with the Philadelphia Phillies on Aug. 18 after umpires found a substance on his glove.

Chiefs’ Mathieu added to active roster
UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu has been added to the active roster from the COVID-19 list.
The three-time All-Pro is listed as questionable for Kansas City’s regular-season opener against Cleveland.
Mathieu tested positive on Sept. 1, even though he was fully vaccinated. He needed to return two negative tests taken 24 hours apart to be eligible to play. Mathieu was still in the protocol on Friday.

— Left tackle Austin Jackson has been activated by the Dolphins from the COVID-19 reserve list, making him eligible to play in the team’s opener at New England. Tight end Adam Shaheen was not activated from the COVID-19 list and will miss the game.
— Hall of Fame center Mick Tingelhoff has died at 81, according to the Vikings and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The ultimate ironman started 240 consecutive games at a bruising position for Minnesota and played in four Super Bowls. Tingelhoff had to wait 31 years for induction into the Hall of Fame, finally having his enshrinement in 2015 through election by a senior committee.

Truex wins in Richmond again
RICHMOND, Va, (AP) — Martin Truex Jr. has won at Richmond for the third time in the last five Cup races at the Virginia track.
Truex Jr. assumed the lead when Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Kyle Busch was penalized for speeding entering pit road with about 50 laps to go.
Truex led a 1-2-3 finish for JGR, with Denny Hamlin finishing second and Christopher Bell third. Hamlin won both stages and led the most laps before settling for runner-up status.
