Glasgow library offers free Halloween costumes to families

GLASGOW, Ky. — The Mary Wood Weldon Memorial Library is helping local families prepare for Halloween by collecting donated costumes and offering them to children at no cost.

The library’s Halloween costume drive runs through Oct. 31. Donations of new or gently used costumes are being accepted, and families can browse the available selections in the library lobby from Oct. 21 through Oct. 31.

Krista Jones, youth services manager at the library, said the program began last year after staff recognized a need in the community.

“We thought we could just take one thing off of parents or grown-ups, their plight. We could make a difference,” Jones said.

As of Oct. 9, the library had collected approximately 20 to 30 costumes. Jones said about 50 people participated last year, when the library offered costumes for one day. This year, the library is extending the availability to give more families an opportunity to participate.

There are no requirements for families to receive a costume. The library accepts costumes for all ages and sizes, including infants and adults.

Donated costumes should be clean and free of broken pieces. Batteries should be removed before costumes are donated. Any costumes remaining after the drive will be donated to Goodwill, according to the library.

Jones encouraged community members to donate costumes their children have outgrown rather than leave them unused.

“If you bring it here, there’s a chance that it can get a second life. Make a kid happy,” Jones said.

The library is also planning a Halloween event specifically for teenagers on Oct. 31 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Savannah Ortega, the library’s teen and tween programmer, said the event will give older children a place to celebrate Halloween while younger children go trick-or-treating.

Activities will include a costume contest, door prizes and scary movies.

“I think it’s really important that teens feel that they are welcome here in this community,” Ortega said.
