COVID-19: “An Inferno Of Infectiousness”

Doctors warn medical resources are being pushed to the limit as coronavirus cases surge. NBC's Jay Gray reports.

(NBC News) — As coronavirus infections continue to soar across the country there is concern the holiday season could add to what is already a dire situation.

“This is a really high risk period,” says Dr. Richard Corsi of Portland State University. “There is an inferno of infectiousness in the country right now across the country.”

Many areas are seeing their highest numbers of the pandemic.

Nationwide daily infections are topping 170,000 per day, with the death toll climbing to close to a quarter of a million.

Hospitals are quickly running out of space to treat those in need.

“We just don’t have the capacity. Soon enough we’re not going to have the capacity to support the amount of illness,” warns Dr. Naila Shereen. She treated COVID-19 patients in New York during the spring. Now she’s seeing a repeat of that deadly situation in Iowa.
