GRAYSON COUNTY – Two Edmonson County men are in police custody following an alleged copper wire theft.

According to a uniform, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a copper wire theft in progress on Bowling Green Road (Highway 185) near the intersection of Rabbit Flat Road on Thursday morning.

A witness told police they called 911 after seeing an SUV with two men inside dragging “several feet of large wire behind the vehicle,” according to a uniform citation.

Police say the witness told them that the copper wire became “caught on a concrete tile and became unhooked.”

According to a uniform citation, the witness followed the vehicle and stopped to speak with the men. The witness then called 911 and provided the license plate number of the SUV.

The investigation shows that the license plate number identified 53-year-old Robert G. Saltsman, of Bee Spring, as the owner of the SUV.

A Grayson County Deputy Chief contacted the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office and the Kentucky State Police to request a check on Saltsman’s home on Oklahoma Road, according to the citation.

A KSP trooper says contact was made with the SUV while responding to Saltsman’s home and saw “pieces of large wire” in the SUV.

Police arrested Saltsman and his passenger, 53-year-old Ezra B. Deering, of Bee Spring.

Deering is charged with unlawful taking (over $10,000, less than $1 million) and first-degree criminal mischief.

Saltsman is charged with theft by unlawful taking (over $10,000, less than $1 million).

Both were lodged at the Grayson County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
