1 dead after vehicle runs red light in Nashville, police identify driver as Bowling Green man

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A Bowling Green man has been identified as the driver in a fatal collision in downtown Nashville.

According to a media release, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) responded to an injury collision on 4th Avenue at Broadway on Saturday.

MNPD’s preliminary investigation indicates that 87-year-old Thomas Cahill, of Bowling Green, was driving south on 4th Avenue. Police say Cahill ran a red light at the Broadway intersection and struck four pedestrians.

58-year-old Timothy Wedlock, of Australia, died as a result of his injuries.

Another pedestrian, a 44-year-old Jacksonville, Florida man, is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. A third pedestrian, a 21-year-old woman from Knoxville, has non-life-threatening injuries. The fourth, a 58-year-old woman from Parsons, Tennessee, is in critical/stable condition at Vanderbilt, according to the release.

MNPD says Cahill was traveling with his 90-year-old wife and her caregiver. The Cahills sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the release, the caregiver told MNPD investigators that she was on her phone in the backseat “when she looked up as she heard the pedestrians being struck.”

Police say Cahill did not show impairment.

The investigation is ongoing.
