Logan County superintendent issues statement after incident at Lewisburg School

LOGAN COUNTY, Ky. – Logan County superintendent Dan Costellow has released a statement following an incident at Lewisburg Elementary School on Wednesday.

Costellow shared the following message to school families:

“I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred today at Lewisburg School. Our top priority is the safety and well-being of all students and staff, and we want to ensure you are kept informed of any matters that may cause concern.”

“Earlier today, an unloaded BB gun was found in a student’s backpack by administration after being alerted by another student. I am proud of how our school and district administration responded promptly and effectively, and even more proud that a student understood the need to report it to an adult. At no time was there any threat to the safety of our students or staff.

“The item has been secured, and we are addressing the matter directly with the student and their family. Additionally, we are working closely with local authorities to ensure proper follow-up as required. Please be assured that the individual will face discipline in accordance with board policy.

“We understand that hearing about incidents like this can be concerning. Please know that we take situations of this nature very seriously and remain committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students. As part of this commitment, we will continue to review and reinforce our safety protocols and expectations with students.”
