Aviation Heritage Park partnering with SKyPAC to help tell story of Floyd Collins
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Aviation Heritage Park Museum is joining forces with the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center to help tell the story of one of south-central Kentucky’s most famous citizens.
The Ramsey Theatre Company is producing Floyd Collins the Musical on March 8 of next year, and in January, an exhibit at SKyPAC will present real artifacts from the life of the cave explorer who was trapped in a nearby Sand Cave in 1925.
The collection of items for display is just beginning.
Bob Bubnis, the executive director of the Aviation Heritage Park Museum, says, “For us to be able to come together and put all of our skills to work, to put together something really great for the community in honor of Floyd Collins, was just an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. Something special about Floyd Collins was it’s very evident that he had a dream, and that is talked about a lot in the show, and it’s very evident in the history behind it as well. Perhaps if you get the chance to come into our exhibit and see these items and see his family and where he came from, and you’ll be able to determine exactly what dream that was for him and how he tried to make it come true.”
The attempted rescue of Floyd Collins brought worldwide attention to south-central Kentucky and its cave systems.
The exhibit covering the explorer’s life will touch on many subjects from the geology of karst to the history of the cave wars.
Tours will be available for classes.
