Suspect arraigned after injury of officer in Olive Hill shooting

OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WOWK) – The suspect in an attack on a Kentucky police officer in rural Olive Hill, Kentucky was arraigned Tuesday morning.

Investigators say Wesley Cornell, 30, of Vanceburg, Kentucky was arrested by a SWAT team.

It comes after an exchange of gunfire in the Laurel Creek Road area of Lewis County Monday after an hours-long manhunt.

A criminal complaint said law enforcement was trying to speak with Cornell.

Cornell then drove away and ran into the woods before he began to shoot at law enforcement.

The officer was not hit by gunfire but was injured by glass that shattered as a result of the shots that hit his cruiser, according to Kentucky State Police. The officer has since been released from the hospital.

Cornell is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer and attempted murder of a police officer.

He is being held on a $1 million bond at Carter County Detention Center.
