9 horses returned to owner in Barren County

BARREN COUNTY, Ky. – The ongoing story surrounding horses that were taken away from their owner in 2019 has reached an end.

Nine horses previously seized by the Barren County government are heading back to one of their original owners.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2023 the Barren County Fiscal Court declared the horses as surplus property.

The fiscal court says the county took official ownership of the horses on Feb. 8, 2021 after a ruling in Barren District Court, where one of the former owners agreed to forfeit them in a plea agreement.

“I feel it is the best interest of Barren County, for all the citizens and tax dollars,” Barren County judge-executive Jamie Bewley Byrd said.
