Warren Regional Juvenile Detention Center to be among destinations for males with violent offenses

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In an effort to improve safety for youth and staff, a new system will be separating juveniles 14 and older with violent offenses.
On Thursday, Gov. Andy Beshear made the announcement that the following detention centers will house qualifying male juveniles with violent or serious offenses:
- Warren Regional Juvenile Detention Center
- Adair Regional Detention Center
- Fayette Regional Juvenile Detention Center
Serious offenses include capitol class A, class B and class C felonies.
Last week, the governor stated the regional model system was outdated when it came to safety. As a result, these three facilities were selected based on the current charges of the youth population, number of detention center beds available and proximity to highways, according to the governor’s office.
The detention centers for juveniles younger than 14 with lower-level offenses, which include class-D felonies or lesser offenses, are the following:
- Boyd Regional Juvenile Detention Center
- Breathitt Regional Juvenile Detention Center
- Jefferson Regional Juvenile Detention Center
- McCracken Regional Juvenile Detention Center
Male juveniles that will also be placed in a high-security facility include those ages 14 or older charged with a class D felony involving unusual violence, as well as those younger than 14 or charged with lesser offenses who engage in violent or disruptive behavior.
The target date for the change is January 2023.
