Sophal Phon receives new sentence
There are new developments on the re-sentencing of a Bowling Green man that was convicted of double murder as a juvenile in 1996. You might remember that back in April, Sophal Phon won his appeal with the state Supreme Court and was set to receive a new sentence.
On Monday, news outlets report that he received a new sentence that would allow him to be considered for parole after serving 25 years.
Phon is now 38-years-old but was 16 when he and other members of what was known as the ‘Asian Boyz’ gang were involved in a home invasion that left 2 people dead.
The state Supreme Court determined that life without parole is not included in a Kentucky statute from 1998 that declared possible punishments for juveniles convicted of committing capital crimes.
