Recap on statewide elections
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Primary elections across Kentucky have concluded with some major shakeups in certain parts of the state, so let’s take a look at the winners across the state and what we can expect to see in November.
In the Senatorial race, both Democrats and Republicans have now made their decision. For Republicans, Congressman Andy Barr, who represent Kentucky’s sixth district, was their choice. Barr says that Washington needs a Republican who will support President Donald Trump.
“Ladies and gentlemen. Look at the world around you. One party wants to open our borders, let people into our country illegally, and defund the police. I do not,” Barr said in his victory speech.
Democrats, on the other end, chose former Kentucky state congressman Charles Booker as their choice for the Senate seat, emphasizing replacing Sen. Mitch McConnell.
“I am proud to be your Democratic nominee, for United States Senate. To finally replace Mitch McConnell,” Booker said.
Congressional races saw one big change for Republicans that came in Kentucky’s fourth district, where incumbent Thomas Massie lost to challenger Ed Gallrein, who was backed by Trump, and thanked his in his victory speech.
“I want to thank President Trump for his support, his endorsement and his counsel as I navigated this campaign, which is a journey of unto itself,” Gallrein said.
Massie, who has challenged Trump while serving in Congress, says that they have maintained a sense of class during their campaign.
“I have called and conceded the race. We’ve been honorable the whole time and we’re going to stay that way,” Massie said to his supporters.
Around $35 million was spend on the Republican primary race in Kentucky’s Fourth district. The most ever spent in one congressional district in the United States.
Closer to home in Kentucky’s first district, Congressman James Comer, who sits as the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, won his primary and will take on Democrat John Williams, who ran unopposed in Kentucky’s second district.
Congressman Brett Guthrie, who sits as the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, will retain the Republican nomination. Meanwhile, Democrats will have a new face as Megan Wingfield won the Democratic primary, defeating Hank Linderman, who has won the primary in the previous four elections.
