Kentucky State Police shares vehicle theft prevention tips during national awareness month
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — As July marks National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, the Kentucky State Police is encouraging drivers to take a few extra precautions to reduce the risk of becoming victims of vehicle theft or break-ins.
Trooper Katan Parker, public affairs officer for KSP Post Three, said many thefts happen because drivers become too comfortable, especially in neighborhoods they consider safe.
“I think people in big neighborhoods get comfortable, and they don’t lock their vehicles, and sometimes they leave them running, or they leave the keys in there,” Parker said. “Or they might leave a whole bunch of valuables in there.”
Parker said even when thieves don’t find anything worth taking, victims can still be left with damaged vehicles and costly repairs.
He also warned that criminals are finding new ways to target newer vehicles equipped with keyless entry systems.
Parker said drivers should avoid leaving their key fobs near doors or windows inside their homes, where thieves may be able to capture or relay the signal.
“People don’t realize that if you don’t keep your key fob away from windows and doors, people can still be able to get into your car using your key fob,” Parker said.
To help protect vehicles, the Kentucky State Police recommends:
- Locking your vehicle every time you leave it.
- Rolling up your windows and closing the sunroof.
- Removing valuables or keeping them out of sight.
- Never leaving your keys or key fob inside the vehicle.
- Parking in well-lit areas whenever possible.
Parker said preventing vehicle theft often comes down to forming simple habits.
“Lock it. Keep it empty. Keep the windows rolled up. Keep the sunroof closed, and try to park it near a light,” Parker said.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, July is recognized as National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month to remind drivers that a few seconds spent securing a vehicle can help prevent a costly theft.
