Tide top Gators
UNDATED (AP) — Top-ranked Alabama went down to the swamp and came away with its 17th consecutive victory.
Bryce Young’s first collegiate road start was a rousing success, a three-touchdown performance that helped the Crimson Tide beat 11th-ranked Florida, 31-29.
The defending national champions stopped a 2-point conversion with 3:10 left and earned their 32nd consecutive win versus teams in the SEC’s East Division.
Young built the early advantage with TD passes to Jase McClellan, Jahleel Billingsley and Brian Robinson to put the Tide ahead, 21-3 in the first quarter.
Emery Jones was 17-of-27 passing for 181 yards, with an interception for the Gators.
In other Top 25 games:
— JT Daniels returned to the lineup and completed 23 of 31 passes for 303 yards and three TDs as second-ranked Georgia hammered South Carolina, 40-13. The Bulldogs’ fearsome defense nearly made it three straight games without allowing a TD until Luke Doty hit Josh Vann on a 36-yard scoring pass with 10:55 remaining.
— Third-ranked Oklahoma defeated Nebraska, 23-16 on the 50th anniversary of the Game of the Century. The Cornhuskers were within 14-9 until Isaiah Coe blocked an extra point and Pat Fields returned it 100 yards for two points.
— Freshman Ty Thompson threw two second-half touchdown passes and No. 4 Oregon overcame a sluggish start to slam Stony Brook, 48-7. Ducks starter Anthony Brown threw for a touchdown and ran for another but left the game at halftime after he was sacked twice to close out the second quarter.
— Tyler Goodson ran for a career-high 153 yards and three touchdowns in fifth-ranked Iowa’s 30-7 trouncing of Kent State. Goodson had a 46-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and added a 35-yard scoring run in the third.
— Will Shipley ran for two touchdowns and sixth-ranked Clemson had a goal-line stand in the final seconds to secure a 14-8 triumph over Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets limited the Tigers to 207 yards the first three quarters and continually came up with third-down stops.
— Zach Calzada threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start to power No. 7 Texas A&M in a 34-0 rout of New Mexico. The victory extends A&M’s winning streak to 11 games and gives the Aggies a 3-0 start for the first time since opening the 2016 season with six consecutive wins.
— Desmond Ridder and Alec Pierce hooked up for the go-ahead score with 12:13 left in the game and No. 8 Cincinnati held on for a 38-24 victory at Indiana. Jerome Ford ran for two touchdowns and Tre Tucker scored on a 99-yard kickoff return after the Bearcats fell behind, 14-0.
— TreVeyon Henderson broke Archie Griffin’s 49-year-old freshman rushing record, romping for 277 yards and three touchdowns as No. 9 Ohio State dumped Tulsa, 41-20. A late interception that Cameron Martinez returned for a 61-yard touchdown made the score look worse than it was for the persistent Golden Hurricane.
— Jaquan Brisker broke up a desperation pass toward the end zone by Auburn’s Bo Nix as time expired, completing No. 10 Penn State’s 28-20 verdict over 22nd-rated Auburn. Sean Clifford completed 28 of 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns, with Jahan Dotson accounting for 10 catches for 78 yards and a TD.
— Kyren Williams scored two long touchdowns, the second a 51-yard run with 6:05 remaining, as 12th-ranked Notre Dame held off Purdue, 27-13. Jack Coan was sacked four times and struggled with his accuracy, completing 15 of 31 for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
— Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw a 15-yard scoring strike to Kyle Phillips with 54 seconds remaining to send No. 13 UCLA to a 37-34 comeback win over Fresno State. Thompson-Robinson passed for 264 yards and three TDs for the Bruins, who outscored the Bulldogs, 20-7 in the fourth quarter.
— Jake Haener heaved a 12-yard scoring pass to Jalen Cropper with 14 seconds left to give Fresno State a 40-37 win over No. 13 UCLA in a thriller at the Rose Bowl. Haener was 39 of 53 for 445 yards and two touchdowns for the Bulldogs, who fell behind with 54 seconds left before going on a 75-yard drive.
— No. 14 Iowa State rolled to a 48-3 win over UNLV behind Brock Purdy, who completed 21 of 24 pass attempts for 288 yards and three touchdowns. The Cyclones finished with 486 yards of offense and 7.59 yards per play, scoring six touchdowns and two field goals on their 11 possessions.
— West Virginia survived No. 15 Virginia Tech’s furious rally from a 20-point deficit to beat the Hokies 27-21. Jarret Doege threw two touchdown passes and Leddie Brown rushed for 106 yards and a score for the Mountaineers.
— Grayson McCall threw for three touchdowns and Shermari Jones ran for 149 yards and another score as No. 16 Coastal Carolina held on to beat Buffalo, 28-25. McCall was 13-of-19 passing for 232 yards and tossed his first interception of the season.
— Matt Corral accounted for seven touchdowns and 17th-rated Mississippi did its scoring in the first three quarters of a 61-21 assault on Tulane. Corral ran for three scores and threw for 335 yards and four TDs.
— BYU’s Jaren Hall threw for 214 yards and two touchdowns as the 23rd-ranked Cougars knocked off No. 19 Arizona State, 27-17. BYU forced four turnovers and posted its third straight victory over the Sun Devils.
— KJ Jefferson threw for a career-high 366 yards and tied a career high with three touchdowns to lead No. 20 Arkansas to a 45-10 win over Georgia Southern. The Razorbacks all but clinched the win on a 91-yard pass from Jefferson to preseason All-SEC wide receiver Treylon Burks with 11:18 left in the third quarter.
— Sam Howell threw five touchdown passes and ran for a career-best 112 yards as No. 21 North Carolina took over after halftime to beat Virginia, 59-39.
— Payton Thorne passed for 261 yards and four touchdowns, two of those scoring throws going to Jalen Nailor in Michigan State’s 38-17 romp over 24th-rated Miami.
— No. 25 Michigan crushed Northern Illinois, 63-10 as Blake Corum rushed for 123 yards and three touchdowns.

Blue Jays flip-flop with Yankees
UNDATED (AP) — The Toronto Blue Jays have leapfrogged ahead of the New York Yankees for the second AL wild card, while the Boston Red Sox took a one-game lead for the first wild card.
The Blue Jays posted a 6-2 victory over the Twins as Marcus Semien became the fifth second baseman to hit 40 home runs in a season. Teoscar (tay-AHS’-kur) Hernández hit a three-run homer and Bo Bichette went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Steven Matz won his fourth straight decision, allowing two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Jays moved a half-game ahead of the Yankees.
Another defensive miscue by catcher Gary Sanchez contributed to a seven-run fifth in the Indians’ 11-3 thrashing of the Yankees. Sanchez failed to catch a foul popup during the rally, which was capped by a three-run homer by Andres Gimenez. Franmil Reyes doubled home a run in the fifth, one inning before belting a two-run homer.
The Red Sox picked up their fourth straight win as Xander Bogaerts (BOH’-gahrts) hit a three-run homer and collected four RBIs in a 9-3 rout of the Orioles. Bobby Dalbec added a two-run double. Hunter Renfroe and Rafael Devers (DEH’-vurz) each drove in a run for Boston.
Tanner Houck worked 2 2/3s innings of shutout relief to get the win.
Elsewhere around the majors:
— Homers by Jeimer (JAY’-mur) Candelario and Dustin Garneau led the Tigers past the AL East-leading Rays, 4-3. Jordan Luplow homered for the Rays, who trailed 4-0 in the second. Michael Fulmer got his 10th save in 15 chances by striking out Brett Phillips and getting Yandy Díaz to ground into a game-ending double play.
— Five Rangers combined on a three-hitter in a 2-1 decision over the AL Central-leading White Sox. DJ Peters hit a tiebreaking single in the bottom of the sixth, a half-inning after Yasmani Grandal (yahs-MAH’-nee grahn-DAHL’) homered for Chicago. Joe Barlow struck out two in the ninth en route to his seventh save.
— The Diamondbacks scored three runs in the 10th inning for a 6-4 win over the Astros. Kole Calhoun knocked in the go-ahead run with an RBI single and scored on Daulton Varsho’s two-run homer. Yordan (yohr-DAHN’) Álvarez smacked a two-run homer to center to give the Astros a 2-0 lead in the first.
— James Kaprielian (kah-PREE’-lee-an) pitched two-hit ball over six innings and Matt Olson crushed his 36th home run in the Athletics’ 3-1 downing of the Angels. Kaprielian earned his eighth win and retired 18 of his 20 batters. The A’s have won four straight and seven of 10, putting them two games behind Toronto for the second AL wild card.
— The Royals ripped the Mariners, 8-1 as Kris Bubic (BOO’-bihk) allowed two hits over 6 1/3 innings in his best start this season. Seattle lost for the fifth time in seven games and dropped four games behind Toronto for the AL’s second wild-card berth with 14 games remaining. Royals catcher Salvador Perez collected his major league-leading 113th RBI with an eighth-inning single.
— Max Scherzer tossed seven scoreless innings as the Dodgers won for the seventh time in eight games, 5-1 over the Reds. Scherzer is 7-0 in nine starts for the Dodgers after limiting Cincinnati to two hits while striking out seven. Gavin Lux hit a two-run triple while the Dodgers took advantage of two errors to score three times in the fifth.
— Curt Casali’s two-run single in the fourth held up in the Giants’ 2-0 shutout of the Braves. Dominic Leone finished the 2-hour, 40-minute game for his second save as the NL West-leading Giants maintained their two-game lead on the Dodgers. Alex Wood struck out four and didn’t allow a walk or hit over three scoreless innings, his first appearance since contracting COVID-19.
— The Phillies are within one game of the NL East-leading Braves after Jean Segura had his first multi-homer game in almost five years, leading a 5-3 win over the Mets. Segura homered in the first inning and again in the third off Carlos Carrasco. Aaron Nola won for the first time in ten starts and Bryce Harper drove in two for Philadelphia.
— Manny Piña homered twice and the Brewers clinched their fourth straight postseason berth with a 6-4 victory over the Cubs. Eduardo Escobar and Jace (jays) Peterson also connected in Milwaukee’s seventh win in nine games. Milwaukee’s magic number to lock up the NL Central title is three over St. Louis.
— Tyler O’Neill launched a go-ahead, two-run homer while the Cardinals scored three times in the eighth to beat the Padres, 3-2. The Cardinals rallied after Yu Darvish held them to three hits while fanning nine over seven shutout innings. The outcome puts St. Louis two games ahead of Cincinnati and 2 1/2 games in front of San Diego for the second NL wild card.
— The Rockies are 7-1 on their nine-game road trip after Kyle Freeland worked six innings and Trevor Story hit a three-run homer in a 6-0 thumping of the Nationals.
— Cole Tucker had three hits and Bryse (brys) Wilson allowed two runs and four hits over five innings of the Pirates’ 6-3 victory against the Marlins.

Padres’ Machado screams at Tatis in dugout after ump dispute
UNDATED (AP) — Manny Machado screamed at All-Star teammate Fernando Tatis (ta-TEES’) Jr. in the dugout during the fifth inning of the Padres’ loss to the Cardinals on Saturday.
Machado shouted and cursed at Tatis, telling him “it’s not about you” and “you go play baseball” after Tatis struck out looking in the fifth. Tatis reacted angrily to the call by plate umpire Phil Cuzzi.

— The Rays have placed center fielder Kevin Kiermaier (KEER’-my-ur) on COVID-related IL. Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said Kiermaier had been feeling ill for a couple of days. Tampa Bay shortstop Taylor Walls was also scratched before the game due to what the team called “general illness.”

Browns safety Harrison fined for sideline skirmish vs Chiefs
CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns safety Ronnie Harrison has been fined just over $12,000 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Harrison shoved Kansas City assistant coach Greg Lewis during a skirmish in last week’s season opener. Harrison was ejected early in Cleveland’s 33-29 loss for his aggressive action toward Lewis.

— The Raiders have placed backup quarterback Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) on injured reserve after he hurt his quadriceps on his only snap in Monday night’s 33-27 overtime win over the Ravens.
— The San Francisco 49ers have placed linebacker Dre Greenlaw on injured reserve with a groin injury that will likely sideline him for at least a month.

Zdeno Chara, 44, returning to Islanders on 1-year contract
UNDATED (AP) — Zdeno Chara (zuh-DAY’-noh CHAH’-rah) is returning to the team where he started his career after agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. It will be the 44-year-old’s 24th NHL season.
Chara was a 1996 draft pick of the Islanders and was later shipped to Ottawa in 2001, one of the worst deals in Isles history. He won a Stanley Cup with the 2011 Bruins and spent last season with Washington.

Choi surges to top of leaderboard
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — K.J. Choi shot a 4-under 66 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Stanford International.
Tied for the first-round lead with Darren Clarke after a 63, Choi had five birdies and bogey to reach 11 under at Minnehaha Country Club.
Paul Stankowski, Alex Cejka (CHAY’-kah) and Rod Pampling share second.
