A’s end Yankees’ win streak
UNDATED (AP) — Desperate for a victory, the Oakland Athletics got one on Saturday while ending the New York Yankees’ longest winning streak in almost 60 years.
Yankees’ 13-game winning streak ended as Frankie Montas (MAHN’-tahs) pitched two-hit ball over seven shutout innings before the A’s held on for a 3-2 win. The A’s had lost six straight and 10 of 12 before handing the charging Yankees their first loss since Aug. 12.
The Yankees didn’t score until Aaron Judge slammed a two-run homer with one out in the ninth off Sergio Romo, who got the final two outs for the save.

— The Red Sox pulled out a 5-3 win over the Indians on a three-run homer by J.D. Martinez in the 10th inning. Martinez had been hitless in 20 consecutive at-bats before going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Kyle Schwarber also had three of Boston’s 12 hits, including a first-inning homer that helped the Bosox keep their 3 1/2-game lead over Oakland for the second AL wild card.
— Salvador Perez homered for the fourth straight game as the Royals beat the Mariners for the third consecutive game, 4-2. Perez lined a two-run shot off the top of the fence for his 37th of the season. Whit Merrifield led off the game with a homer and Kansas City starter Daniel Lynch fell one out short of a victory.

Indians send struggling reliever Karinchak to minors
UNDATED (AP) — The Indians are giving James Karinchak (kah-RIHN’-chak) a chance to regain his effectiveness without pitching in the major league spotlight.
The reliever has been optioned to Triple-A Columbus after surrendering a go-ahead, three-run homer in Friday’s 4-3 loss to the Red Sox.
Karinchak off to a very nice start this season, but he’s 1-2 and has an 8.40 ERA with nine strikeouts in 15 innings over 18 games since the All-star break.
First baseman Bobby Bradley was activated from the 10-day injured list after recovering from a sore knee.

— The Pirates have released struggling outfielder Gregory Polanco, cutting ties with the last remaining player from the group that helped guide the franchise to three straight postseason berths from 2013-15. Polanco hit just .208 with 11 home runs and 36 RBIs this season and had recently become a target for frustrated fans. His $11.6 million contract accounts for more than 20% of Pittsburgh’s team payroll.
— The Cubs have placed infielder David Bote (BOH’-tee) on the 10-day injured list. He sprained his right ankle when he stepped on a ball during batting practice before Friday’s game against the White Sox. The ball was obscured by some white lettering in foul territory at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Jags send Minshew to Eagles
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have traded backup quarterback Gardner Minshew to Philadelphia for a conditional draft pick in 2022.
The deal comes a day after head coach Urban Meyer named rookie Trevor Lawrence as his starting signal caller. Minshew joins a team that already has starter Jalen Hurts and backup Joe Flacco.
The Eagles cut third-string quarterback Nick Mullens to make room for Minshew.

— Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins injured his left knee early in Saturday’s preseason finale at Washington. Dobbins was attended to on the field, went to the blue injury tent and was carted off the sideline and ruled out for the remainder of the game.
— Titans head coach Mike Vrabel (VRAY’-bul) missed Saturday’s preseason finale against the Bears, a week after testing positive for COVID-19. A pair of coaches and another player have joined the protocols as the team’s outbreak grows. Wide receivers coach Rob Moore and offensive line assistant Jason Houghtaling missed the game because of the virus protocols. Rookie wide receiver Racey McMath also was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Saturday, increasing the Titans’ number of players and coaches on some sort of COVID watch to 12.
— The NFL has suspended Giants linebacker Ryan Anderson for the first six games of the regular season for violating the league policy on performance enhancers. Anderson opened training camp on New York’s non-football injury list because of a back issue. The Giants cut him early in August, then re-signed him.
PGA-BMW CHAMPIONSHIP
DeChambeau, Cantlay share lead
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay are co-leaders through three rounds of the PGA’s BMW Championship near Baltimore.
DeChambeau had back-to-back eagles and back-to-back shots in the water as he posted a 5-under 67 that leaves him 21 under on the friendly Caves Valley course. Cantlay didn’t drop a shot until a tee shot into deep rough on the 18th that led to bogey and a 66.
Sungjae Im birdied his last two holes for a 66 and was three shots behind. Rory McIlroy, who had a bogey-free 65 but made up only two shots on the lead, putting him in a group with Abraham Ancer (AN’-sur) of Mexico, Sam Burns and Sergio Garcia at 17 under.
The top 30 advance to next week’s Tour Championship at East Lake.
PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS-ALLY CHALLENGE
Langer grabs piece of lead
GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — Bernhard Langer birdied the final hole for a 6-under 66 and a share of the second-round lead in The Ally Challenge.
A day after shooting his age on his 64th birthday, Langer had six birdies in a bogey-free round at Warwick Hills to match Doug Barron at 14-under.
Langer is four off Hale Irwin’s record of 45 PGA Tour Champions victories.
VIRUS OUTBREAK-NBA
NBA referees to be vaccinated this season
UNDATED (AP) — NBA referees will all be vaccinated against the coronavirus this season.
The NBA announced Saturday that it has struck a deal with the National Basketball Referees Association on that requirement. Part of the referees’ agreement with the NBA also says that those working games will receive booster shots once they become recommended.
The NBA’s agreement with the referees was revealed one day after the league told its teams that anyone within close proximity of players and referees will also have to be vaccinated.
Players are not required to be fully vaccinated.

— The Grizzlies have waived veteran guard Rajon Rondo (RAH’-zhahn RAHN’-doh), who was acquired 12 days earlier in a deal that sent guard Eric Bledsoe to the Clippers for Rondo, Patrick Beverly and center Daniel Oturu. Rondo split last season between the Clippers and Hawks. His biggest impact came on the sideline, where the 35-year-old guard served as an unofficial assistant coach, bolstering his teammates with pep talks during timeouts.
NHL-HURRICANES-KOTKANIEMI
Canes give Kotkaniemi offer sheet.
UNDATED (AP) — The Hurricanes have tendered an offer sheet to Canadiens restricted free agent Jesperi Kotkaniemi (yehs-PEHR’-ee kaht-kahn-YEH’-mee).
Kotkaniemi signed the offer sheet for $6.1 million for next season. The Canadiens have seven days to match or receive Carolina’s 2022 first- and third-round picks as compensation.
The 21-year-old Finn is still trying to hone his game after being taken third overall in the 2018 draft. He has 22 goals and 62 points in 171 NHL games.
The offer is a response to Montreal trying to poach Carolina’s Sebastian Aho (AH’-hoh) the same way two years ago.
LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES
Ohio, Michigan reach title game
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) — Sunday’s Little League World Series championship will have a Big-Ten feel to it.
Ohio and Michigan advanced to the title game by winning on Saturday. Cooper Oden struck out six and allowed two runs over five innings Saturday as Ohio hung on to beat South Dakota, 5-2. Cameron Thorning hit a two-run homer and struck out seven over 3 ⅓ innings as Michigan defeated Hawaii, 2-1.
Ohio became the first team in LLWS history to reach the championship game without winning its regional tournament, finishing as a runner-up in the Great Lakes to Michigan.
VIRUS OUTBREAK-US OPEN
US Open players don’t need COVID shots but now fans, others do
NEW YORK (AP) — There’s been a change in vaccination rules for the U.S. Open with the tennis tournament set to begin on Monday.
Players and their team members don’t need to be vaccinated for COVID-19 — but now, spectators do. Others such as chair umpires, ball kids and members of the media also need to show proof of vaccination.
As recently as Wednesday, the U.S. Tennis Association said fans wouldn’t need to be vaccinated. But, prompted by the New York mayor’s office, the USTA did an about-face, deciding Friday to make it mandatory for fans over 12 years old entering the grounds to show proof they’ve received one dose.
F1-BELGIAN GRAND PRIX
Verstappen takes pole position for Belgian GP, Russell 2nd
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium (AP) — Max Verstappen produced a brilliant last lap in the rain to take the pole position for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix and deny George Russell his first career pole in Formula One.
Verstappen now leads Lewis Hamilton 6-3 for pole positions this season and is in a good position to claw back Hamilton’s eight-point lead in the championship.
