Bowling Green Junior High School undergoing major renovation and addition
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Construction is underway at Bowling Green Junior High School as the school begins a major renovation and addition project aimed at creating more space for students and updating existing areas.
Principal Robert Lightning said the project will address the school’s changing needs as enrollment continues to grow. The school currently has about 1,000 students.
“This project is a renovation and an addition project,” Lightning said. “We will be renovating many of our spaces inside of the school to update those to meet our changing needs.”
The most visible part of the project is a new addition being built where the school’s former bus loop was located.
The new space will support the school’s performing arts programs, including band, choir, orchestra and drama. It will also include multimedia and digital spaces for journalism and robotics.
The addition is designed to give students more opportunities to practice, create and collaborate. Lightning said the project will include individual practice rooms, along with recording and playback capabilities.
“Those spaces will allow our teachers to now record and do some playback,” Lightning said. “There will be some individual practice rooms, some different spaces within those new spaces to accommodate those students’ needs.”
The project will also provide additional collaborative space for students and teachers.
While the addition is being constructed, renovations to the existing school building are expected to begin next summer.
Those renovations will include work in the cafeteria. Plans call for increasing the amount of space available for students, modernizing the furniture and addressing noise levels.
Lightning said the improvements are intended to make sure the school has spaces that can accommodate its student body and its evolving programs.
The entire project is expected to take about 20 months.
School officials acknowledge construction will create some inconveniences and are asking families to stay informed and patient as the work continues.
The completed project will give Bowling Green Junior High additional instructional, performing arts and technology-related spaces while also updating portions of the existing school.
