Bowling Green baseball ends season with loss in state tournament

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Bowling Green baseball ended its 2026 season with a 6-0 loss to McCracken County in the state tournament, presented by UK HealthCare.
The Mustangs were the team that knocked the Purples out of the state tournament their last two appearances in 2018 and 2021 and added another tally to that number on Thursday at Legends Field.
In this game, the Mustang defense demonstrated what has helped get them to state the past 12 seasons, allowing just three Bowling Green hits through seven innings.
“We knew what we were up against, defensively pitching,” Purples head coach Nathan Isenberg said. “We kept ourselves in the game until the very end. We had a miscue, but our guys fought and battled. That’s all you can ask.”
At the top of the fifth inning, Jack Cowan doubled, hoping to bring a spark to his team’s offense, but McCracken County pitcher Kaden Kern continued to close the door on any Purples momentum with four strikeouts in his outing on the mound.
Kern was a force at the plate too, with a monster of a hit in the sixth inning that brought home two Mustangs.
McCracken held it down the rest of way, ending a historic season for the Purples, but the loss doesn’t take away from the opportunity these guys had to play one last time with each other on the state tournament stage.
“We set the school record in wins, won the region title when we weren’t projected to win the region title,” senior James Yarbrough said. “We came to this year as a preseason 20, finished as the fifth or sixth ranked team in the state, so I think we just left a legacy. That’s what I hoped to do.”
“People doubted us all year long,” senior Landon Gilbert said. “From the get-go, preseason, nobody thought that we would really do anything this year and this group of guys is really special to me, some of the best teammates that I’ve ever had as guys and talent-wise. We just went in, put in work every day. And I think it’s just a blessing to be able to be here.”
The Purples end the season as 4th region champions with their first state tournament appearance in five years.
