Historic library in Franklin gets $6 million dollar upgrade

FRANKLIN,Ky.- After more than 80 years in the Franklin community, the historic Goodnight Library is receiving a $6 million upgrade.

The library is going from 6,000 to nearly 11,000 square feet.

The upgrade will include a new computer space, kids and teen spaces and a brand-new auditorium, which will include a green room.

While many libraries across the country are shutting down, Kentucky libraries like Good Night are thriving.

The vice chairman of the Simpson County Public Library Board of Trustees said that’s because they offer more than just reading.

“We meet a lot of different needs for our community. Not only is a library now a place to check out books, which obviously it still is. Movies, DVDs, computer usage is big for people who may not have internet access in their homes. Just a gathering space, a social space as well, and we want to create more of that in our community,” said Tammie Carey, vice chairwoman at Simpson County Public Library Board of Trustees.

The renovation is expected to be completed in January of 2020.  There is a temporary location for the library until then.
