UN official: Airstrikes on NW Syria border area worrying

BEIRUT (AP) — A U.N. official says airstrikes in northwest Syria near the Turkish border that killed a person and set afire trucks used to distribute aid targeted areas considered the safest in the rebel-held region. Syrian opposition activists and a paramedic group say the airstrikes on several locations have killed at least one person and set several trucks used to distribute aid on fire. The late Sunday attacks angered Turkey, which asked Russia to secure an immediate end to such strikes and placed its troops on high alert. Mark Cutts, U.N. deputy regional humanitarian coordinator for the Syria crisis, called the attacks “extremely worrying” as they endangered the lives of the area’s most vulnerable population.
