July is Disability Pride Month: local nonprofit spreads awareness

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – July is Disability Pride Month, a time to recognize the history, achievements and contributions of people with disabilities.

The month also marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which was signed into law in July 1990 to protect the rights of people with disabilities and promote equal opportunity.

Today, Disability Pride Month celebrates the strength, resilience and accomplishments of the disability community while raising awareness about the importance of inclusion and accessibility.

The Hive, Inc. founder Laura Orsland spoke about what Disability Pride Month means to her and the community they serve.

“It helps raise awareness. But for us here at The Hive, every month is Disability Pride Month. We don’t do anything necessarily special other than talking to folks and getting the word out to the community that we’re here.” 

The Hive serves as a Bowling Green-based nonprofit that supports and encourages adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act is this Sunday.
