Nebraska Sen. Sasse bets political future on opposing Trump

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse is defying his state party and almost every ambitious would-be Republican leader by betting there’s a GOP future that doesn’t involve bowing to Donald Trump’s fervent base of supporters. Sasse is under threat of censure by the state party for linking Trump’s words to the riot on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol. The senator is urging a return to a more traditional conservative movement while blasting members of his own party as bowing to a “cult of personality” for defending Trump. There’s evidence in swing-voting areas of Nebraska of a market for what the 48-year-old second-term senator is selling.
