Baby in stable condition following crash that killed infant’s mom
GLASGOW, Ky. – One woman is dead, and a baby has been hospitalized after a crash with a semi-truck Thursday morning.
Kentucky State Police were called to a two-vehicle collision near Exit 14 on the Cumberland Parkway in Barren County at around 6:30 a.m.
Cassie Horton, 24, of Glasgow, was operating a white Ford.
Her vehicle crossed the median and entered into oncoming traffic where the vehicle struck a semi-truck operated by Stevie Surgener, 60, of Eubank, Ky., according to Kentucky State Police.
Horton was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Barren County Coroner.
Horton’s 8-month-old son was taken by ambulance to T.J. Samson Community Hospital and later flown to Norton Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
“Any time that we go to a collision where a child is involves, obviously it’s a stressful time and a traumatic situation. But, you know, earlier today we had heavy rain. We had a lot of traffic, it’s morning traffic going to work, going to different places. With the heavy rainfall comes more collisions. We just want to advise people to slow down, take your time and hopefully get to your destination safely,” said KSP Trooper Daniel Priddy.
While the cause of the collision has not yet been released, the roadways were slick and wet during the time of the collision.
“We’ve had a whole lot of heat, a whole lot of rain, but anytime we have any moisture or precipitation on the roadway, you have to almost approach it as a hazard road conditions. You need to think that around every curve it could be slippery surfaces. You need to take your time, slow down, and just go ahead and prepare yourself for any type of inclement weather,” said Priddy.
The baby was listed in stable condition Thursday afternoon while Surgener was uninjured in the collision.
