Man charged with attempted murder of a police officer

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Bowling Green man is accused of ramming his car into a Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy’s car and dragging a deputy during a traffic stop Thursday.

Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy J.D. Thompson stopped a car Thursday for a seat belt violation near the Greenwood Mall, according to a release from Bowling Green Police Department.

The car was driven by Brandon Ray Cherry, 23.

Thompson asked for Cherry’s license and was told he did not have a license. Thompson then asked Cherry to exit his car. Cherry put the car into reverse and is accused of ramming Thompson’s patrol car then continued to push the cruiser back until it struck a parked car., according to the release.

Thompson attempted to stop Cherry as he put the car in drive dragging the deputy a short distance, according to the release. Cherry left at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at an intersection on the mall property and collided with another vehicle causing a significant amount of damage to both vehicles.

The driver of the second car was not injured. Cherry ran from his vehicle but a Bowling Green Police Officer captured Cherry a short distance later by.

Officers said they found a significant amount of drugs in a brown satchel Cherry had in his possession, according to the release.

Officers contacted the Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force and asked for detectives to assist in the investigation.

Deputy Thompson’s K-9 was in the cruiser at the time of the collision and was taken to a veterinarian to be evaluated. The K-9 did not sustain any injuries as a result of the collision.

Cherry is charged with attempted murder of police officer, first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree fleeing or evading police in a motor vehicle, first-degree fleeing or evading police on foot, resisting arrest, disregarding a stop sign, failure to wear a seat belt and third-degree assault of a police officer.

The Bowling Green-Warren County Drug Task Force is expected to place drug charges at a later time.

Cherry is lodged in the Warren County Regional Jail.
