Local high school students compete in a battle of skills

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – High school students from across the region are competing in a variety of occupational skill and leadership activities at SKYCTC in Bowling Green today for a chance to win scholarships.

During the Skills USA competition, students learned leadership skills while being evaluated on public speaking, job skills, and trade skills.

Students from multiple counties around South Central Kentucky are competing in 99 occupational skill areas including electrical wiring, welding, automotive work, and more.

“They get exposure to career opportunities that they may have learned over the past several years at their high school,” said Denna White, Director of Admissions at SKYCTC.

Participating students from Warren and Barren counties say they enjoy this opportunity to compete and learn more about their interests.

Skills USA holds local, regional, state and national competitions that allow students to compete in different trades and other skills in order to help provide experience to high school students.

Not only do students get to compete, but winners earn medallions and have opportunities for scholarships.

1,000 students from around Kentucky will advance to the state competition and more than 5,500 students from around the country will compete in the national competition.
