WKU hosts Roblox for a new learning experience

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Roblox started its first seminar at WKU this weekend to teach about problem-solving. Roblox held this opportunity to teach students about the importance of problem-solving and how a video game can help with real-world problems.

The students worked in teams to think of a common issue that people face in everyday life. Some examples of the problems that the students thought about were boredom, taking care of the environment, helping people save money, and many more. The students then thought of a four-step process in a game on Roblox to help solve the problem or come up with a makeshift solution. Roblox Senior Director of Education Policy, Adam Seldow, brought up the importance of students learning to use and understand technology to help solve problems.

“It’s incredibly important to make sure the next generation is prepared to work in a technical world. With the advent of AI and the proliferation of it right now, it’s super important that you have those technical skills from an earlier age. And so learning those skills while making a game in a fun environment is a great way to be introduced to those topics and really learn how to build upon them so that you can use them to build great things.” Says Seldow.

While the students collaborated on how to come up with solutions to their problems, the parents were learning about how to keep their kids safe with technology and specifically on Roblox. Representatives from Roblox explained how they are implementing new safety features for kids at different ages and how parents can help keep track of these features.

“With anything students do online, especially when they’re younger, parents should be a part of it. Parents play an enormous role in making sure that, students and their families are safe online. Roblox takes that extremely seriously. And so there’s a number of safeguards we put in place to help parents make sure that their kids are safe. So first of all, we have a number of technical ways that we ensure safety of the accounts and the experiences online. Second, we have parent controls that allow parents to play this role by not only, making sure that the kids can access the games that the parents want them to, but to make sure that parents have a say over how and when the kids communicate and if they’re spending money or not.” Says Seldow.

Roblox’s goal from this was to help teach students about problem solving using something they are interested in. They also used this as an opportunity to highlight the Congressional App Challenge and how students can participate in that.
