Lady Spartans ready to take on 2026 Softball State Tournament
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – South Warren softball has had a remarkable season thus far, winning the 14th District and claiming the 4th Region, but there’s one more box to check for the Lady Spartans: winning the 2026 state tournament.
“ Coming into this season, I knew we were going to be special, but 41-0, I don’t think you go into a season being like, ‘We’re going to go undefeated,'” senior McLaine Hudson said. “I mean, we’ve accomplished so many goals, had our heads on our shoulders, and we’ve gotten a lot of the outcomes we’ve wanted.”
“You know, 41 wins is nice, but it’d be even nicer to have four more,” senior Kinleigh Russell said. “We’re just trying to stay in the present and work hard so we can finish the season out strong.”
It’s been a dominant season for South whose talented upper classmen core has not only led the team to all wins, but most in big fashion.
The Lady Spartans have been ranked amidst the top teams both in the state and in the country, and deservedly so, having only six games decided by five runs or less.
The team is coming off a 4th Region final that falls into that slim category, and while some may be skeptical seeing that score, head coach Kelly Reynolds is grateful her girls faced a bit of adversity.
“I was very happy with the way it turned out. I thought we needed that,” Reynolds said. “We needed that moment of being in a situation where we were having to face some adversity and having to push through it and kind of stay calm and relaxed.”
Now the stakes are heightened.
Travelling to Lexington, the team aims to cap off the best season in program history, a decorated history that’s got all but one thing: a state championship trophy.
After building a more mature mindset from shortcomings in the past, the squad is looking to become just the fourth in the last 20 seasons to finish flawless on the diamond in the Bluegrass.
The Lady Spartans are ready to get the job done with just four more wins.
“I think we’ll stay cool, calm, and collected and just be ourselves and play South Warren softball,” sophomore Keegan Pruitt said. “That’s the thing we always say, if we play our game, we can never be defeated.”
“You know, we’ve prepped, we’ve played an extremely hard schedule to get us where we are and to keep us going, so hopefully that all pays off,” Reynolds said.
South Warren is set to open the tournament against Oldham County on Thursday evening.
The matchup with the Lady Colonels is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET on the diamond at John Cropp Stadium.
