Bowling Green Youth Orchestra celebrates 25th anniversary

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green Youth Orchestra celebrated its 25th anniversary with a special concert Monday night.

The orchestra is made up of more than 60 students from across south-central Kentucky and parts of Tennessee.

The performance featured four pieces, each conducted by a music director who has played a role in the program’s 25-year history.

“It just gives you hope for the future,” said Pam Thurman, the orchestra’s first conductor. “It shows that kids know how to work hard, make music and work together as a team. It’s been a treat. I’ve enjoyed it very much.”

The orchestra also received special recognition from the Kentucky State Senate.

“Sen. Mike Wilson presented us with an award to honor all the work that’s gone into this group over the last 25 years,” said Patrick O’Rourke, the orchestra’s conductor and music director. “This kind of program doesn’t happen without a lot of hard work from very dedicated people.”

O’Rourke added that the students’ commitment to each other is what makes the group stand out.
