Logan County Schools seeking public input on district facilities plan
RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – Logan County Schools is asking community members to weigh in on the future of its school buildings as the district works to update its District Facilities Plan.
District leaders hosted a public forum Thursday evening at the Logan County Board of Education office as part of the planning process, which happens every four years in Kentucky school districts.
The District Facilities Plan evaluates the condition of school buildings across the district and identifies what improvements or upgrades may be needed over the next four years. That can include things like roofs, heating and cooling systems, plumbing, and other infrastructure that naturally wears out over time.
Superintendent Dr. Dan Costellow said the meetings are designed to bring together school officials, staff and community members to talk about those needs and gather feedback.
“The purpose of this committee is to look at the needs across the district and determine what we need to be working on over the next four years,” Costellow said. “We work with an architect, and they’ll go through the buildings. They’ll look at our systems, roofs, fire alarms, plumbing, outdoor structures, a number of different things.”
Costellow said the process allows the district to review building conditions while also hearing from people who may notice issues or concerns officials might miss.
Community involvement is a key part of the process, he said, because public feedback helps guide the planning committee as it develops priorities for the district’s facilities.
“We’re happy for the public to come and comment, ask questions,” Costellow said. “It’s an opportunity for people to ask questions and to really understand what we’re doing. Maybe they see something that we don’t.”
District leaders say the facilities plan does not make final decisions on construction projects or funding but instead helps identify priorities for improvements in the coming years.
Another public forum is scheduled for March 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Logan County Board of Education office. District officials say community members are encouraged to attend and share their input as the planning process continues.
