Logan County Fair sees sun, rain and smiles all week long

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. – Umbrellas went up and muddy shoes piled in, but the Logan County Fair didn’t miss a beat this week, even with clouds overhead and rain in the forecast on Friday.

Crowds still lined up for carnival rides, fried food, and Friday night’s thunderous tractor pull. Many said the weather didn’t stop them from showing up, or showing up again and again.

“I’ve been here the last few days,” one fairgoer said. “Yeah, it’s rained some, but it’s still been fun. I’m here for the rides, especially the Superman.”

Others mentioned their favorite way to enjoy the fair: food first, rides second.

“You’ve gotta eat before you ride,” one man said. “I go straight for the bacon cheese fries, then the rides, maybe.”

Funnel cakes, lemon shake-ups, and chicken tenders all made repeat appearances in people’s hands, and on their minds. Asked what food stood out most, one fairgoer didn’t hesitate: “Funnel cakes, for sure. And the fries.”

Friday’s weather brought scattered showers and cooler air, a change welcomed by those walking the fairgrounds. But for the fair board, that didn’t change much about their approach.

“We’re here to make sure Logan County and the surrounding area have a good, fair experience,” said one fair board member. “Rain doesn’t stop a kid from smiling or having fun at the fair.”

Tonight’s demolition derby is expected to go on as planned, and if anything, organizers say, a little mud only adds to the show. The cornhole tournament will take place indoors, rain or shine, and a children’s pageant is also on the schedule for Saturday afternoon.

For many, this isn’t just a weekend event, it’s a summer staple. Several fairgoers said they attend every night, every year.

“This one’s just more fun,” one visitor said. “I’ve been to fairs in South Carolina and other places, but Logan County feels more like home.”

The fair wraps up Saturday night, but the countdown to next year’s fun is already underway.
