Scottsville declares April as ‘Child Abuse Prevention Month’
SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – This afternoon, the City of Scottsville officially declared April as ‘Child Abuse Prevention Month.’
According the the National Children’s Alliance, over 500,00 kids experience abuse within the United States. Nearly 1 billion experience sexual violence globally.
Allen County law enforcement, community leaders, and child advocacy members gathered to show their support for the cause.
A proclamation was read aloud discussing the matter. Awards were also given out for other contributions for children.
Mike Lindsey, long-time area attorney, talks about the importance of supporting victims. He believes giving “justice for children” is crucial, and this is something he says he has strived to do since 1997. Lindsey adds that children “need people protecting them.”
Lindsey reveals that he has overseen hundreds of child abuse cases within Scottsville. Most, he includes, are related to drugs and pornography.
Lindsey and others displayed the color blue to show their support.
Director of Programs at the Family Enrichment Center, Samantha Berry, encourages others to speak out against child abuse. She urges people to “shine lights on things that are dark.” Berry encourages others to educate themselves about the topic.
Berry advises “for our futures to be better … we have to talk.”
