LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On Monday, a Louisville man was sentenced in connection to a carjacking that resulted in the death of a teenage driver.

Court documents state 31-year-old Michael Dewitt was sentenced to 20 years and five months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release, officials say.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office, Western District of Kentucky, Dewitt “committed a carjacking at gunpoint on March 1, 2021 and stole a 2011 Ford F350 from its owner in Simpsonville.”

Officials say while Dewitt fled from the scene in the stolen truck, he hit a vehicle on Dixie Highway in Louisville, killing a minor.

Dewitt had controlled substances in his system during that time, officials say.

This case was investigated by the FBI Louisville Field Office, the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.
