Warren Co. schools help recycle with friendly competition

WARREN COUNTY, Ky. – Everyone wants to be kind, whether its through acts of service or compliments, but some local schools have chosen to extend that kindness to mother earth.

Warren County Public Schools elementary school students are collecting aluminum cans in a friendly competition between schools. Schools will collect cans and send them to their local scrapyard, where their school can keep the money they make.

The contest, which is run through the BALL Corporation and SA recycling, is looking to teach the students that not only can you help save the earth but there are careers in recycling as well.

“These kids are learning about metal recycling, and also jobs in the recycling industry, which is like a massive industry, and our planet needs help. And so I just want to see our kids, and I think they’re the ones that are going to be inheriting this planet. And so if we can teach them how to, make it a better place for their kids, I think that’s really important,” President of Recycling is like Magic Jessica Alexanderson said.

However, while raising some money for the school is great, teaching the young minds that they can make an impact when it comes to taking care of the earth is what matters most.

“We want them to know that they can make a difference. And when they make a difference, it’s an easy step. And they see that those easy steps can lead into other recycling events or other preservation events for the earth,” said Scott Jones, principal of Briarwood Elementary.

The competition runs until April 30, then prizes of $1500, $1000 and $500, including an extra $1000 for the MVR or Most Valuable Recycler, will be handed out.
