Warren Central High School honors veterans for Veterans Day
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Warren Central High School honored the country’s veterans for Veterans Day today by re-enacting the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers.
The school gym was silent, as warnings to maintain silence were posted before heading into the gym. In the gym, members of the Warren Central JROTC program guarded a recreation of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers located at the Arlington National Cemetery. Every 30 minutes, the students re-enacted the Changing of the Guard, inspecting uniforms and weapons before falling in line and switching out with their fellow students. One JROTC member said while nerve racking, the honor is incredible.
“The nerves kind of set in, just praying you don’t drop that rifle. And once you get out there and you’re facing the two and especially dampers and arms, you really go back and start thinking about what it actually means to be standing out there on that mat and truly, truly what you’re saluting to to the men and women that have given their lives and that are unknowns” said Warren Central JROTC member Kelcey Turner.
Warren Central students also filed in to see the re-enactment take place. Another JROTC member mentioned why events like these are important to the younger generations.
“They have to know the big sacrifices men and women have made for this amazing country. You know, we can’t we can’t let that die. We can’t let it be forgotten,” Warren Central JROTC member Wilfredo Torres said.
The students worked tirelessly to perfect the difficult routine, putting in 60 hours of practice each to make sure they honor our vets in the highest way possible.
