Bowling Green Public Works gears up for leaf pick up

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- As the vibrant colors of fall continue to blanket the city, Bowling Green Public Works  is prepared to tackle the seasonal task of leaf collection. With leaves cascading from trees and covering the streets, the city’s Public Works department has officially kicked off its annual leaf pickup program. Loads of leaves have already been picked up and this year, the initiative will run from October through January, ensuring that storm drains remain clear and functional throughout the season.

Andy Souza, the Executive Director of Bowling Green Public Works, explains the importance of this effort. “Part of the reason we do our leaf pickup is to keep storm drains clean,” he says. He highlights a specific example near Scottsville Road, where an injection well is crucial for managing water flow. “If that clogs up, then this whole area is prone to flooding, so we’ve got to keep that under preventative maintenance,” Souza adds.

The commitment to maintaining the city’s infrastructure is evident, with Bowling Green Public Works already collecting more than 17 tons of leaves. This proactive approach not only helps prevent flooding but also enhances the overall aesthetic and safety of city streets.

Residents are encouraged to take part in the leaf collection process. Bowling Green Public Works will be picking up leaves from city streets, and for those looking for more information on the schedule and guidelines, details are available at https://www.bgky.org/publicworks/leaf-pickup.
