Kentucky State Police issues warning for motorists
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- As it finally starts to feel like fall, the Kentucky State Police have a warning for motorists.
Fall is the peak season for deer-related crashes according to the agency. According to their reports, last year, there were 3,285 deer-related crashes in Kentucky, resulting in 202 injuries and three fatalities.
Here are a few tips for drivers as we near peak deer season:
- Drive at a safe speed, especially during dawn and dusk when deer are most active. Slowing down gives you more time to react if a deer appears.
- At night, use high beams when there’s no oncoming traffic. High beams can help you spot deer eyes reflecting light from a distance.
- Pay attention to deer crossing signs, which are posted in areas where deer-vehicle collisions have occurred.
- If you see a deer in your path, brake firmly but stay in your lane. Swerving to avoid a deer can cause serious crashes.
- If you do accidentally hit a deer, be sure to move your vehicle to the side of the road, turn on your hazard lights, and inspect your vehicle for damage. If there’s significant damage, call for roadside assistance.
