WNKY News 40 Weather Report: Check Your Tire Pressure

Cooler Temperatures Can Lower Tire Pressure

BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-As temperatures drop across south central Kentucky, prepare for the risk for underinflated tires.

“Any time the temperature changes in extremes going into summer, heading into winter, your tire pressure monitoring system may flash.” Said Lynda Lambert, Media Spokesperson AAA East Central

When the tire pressure monitoring system alerts your dashboard, that means it’s time for immediate tire maintenance, which ultimately affects the safety and fuel economy of your vehicle.

“Tires are the only part of the vehicle that actually comes in contact with the road and cold weather is particularly problematic because cold temperatures make the air denser, and that reduces the pressure in your tires.”- Lambert

Based on the ideal gas law. The pressure and volume of your tires can be directly affected by temperature and theory. Air moves slower in your tire when temperatures drop, resulting in lower pressure. When temperatures rise, the air moves faster, causing the tire to expand. Findings have shown that for every ten degrees, your tire pressure can change by 1 pound per square inch.

“If that indicator light comes on, sometimes it’ll go off after you start driving when the tires warm up. That’s not necessarily an indicator that things are all good. You want to make sure to check those tires, especially in the winter when they’re cold. Before you ever head out on the road.” Said Lambert

The recommended tire pressure varies by vehicle. You can typically find the recommended settings on the driver’s side door. The main takeaway is to be mindful of your tire pressure before embarking on your next journey.
