“Mr. Western” Lee Robertson passes away at 102

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – A Bowling Green and WKU legend is being remembered across the community.

According to WKU Media Relations, “Mr. Western” Lee Robertson passed away Wednesday morning. Robertson was 102.

Robertson graduated from WKU in 1950 graduate with a major in health and physical education.

Robertson served in the U.S. Army’s 44th Tank Battalion in World War II.

Robertson held many positions in the South Central Kentucky community. He served as superintendent for Barren County Schools, Director of Alumni Affairs and Placement Services, WKU golf coach, and many others. His impact on the community spanned over half of a decade.

In August 2022, Robertson was recognized as the first WKU Spirit of Western Award recipient. According to the WKU Alumni Association website, the award recognizes an individual who represents enthusiasm for Western, loyalty to the institution and principles of the Western experience and its motto “The Spirit Makes the Master.” Robertson was associated with the university for 77 years.

In a 2020 interview with WNKY News 40, Robertson credited the spirit of the people of South Central Kentucky and humbly accepted the honor of the title “Mr. Western.”

“There’s only one Mr. Western,” said Robertson. “With all the great people that’s been here and the great things they’ve done, somewhere I got that title. I said I don’t know that I deserve it, but I sure do appreciate it. And when they use it, it’s very pleasing.”

Robertson is survived by his wife Joyce, daughter Melinda, son Steve and three granddaughters.

Keeping Mama Joyce and the entire Robertson family in our thoughts while also reflecting on Lee’s remarkable life and unparalleled contributions to our university. Rest well, Mr. Western.”
