GoBG Transit adds new buses, route changes planned
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- New changes to the public transportation system in Bowling Green are coming after surveys from bus riders.
“We’ve seen an 18% jump in ridership,” said Austin Sims, operations manager of GoBG Transit. GoBG Transportation has been seeing changes in passengers within the past five years.
The business has also been planning on new buses and route changes. Sims said that after hearing to the community’s input, they are listening.
“We added route 4B just to kind of see how it would do. Route 4 is our busiest route. It has Campbell Lane, Scottsville Road, parts of Russell Road, the three major ones, still continues to grow,” Sims said.
After what was a test run, it has now been officially added.
According to the U.S. Census, Bowling Green’s population has grown by thousands within the past couple of years, and with gas prices still on the rise, people are turning to the $2 ride to get back and forward.
July 10, they added a new bus to Route 4, or the Yellow Route, which lowers waiting times for passengers. That makes two buses.
“Currently, all our routes here are about an hour wait. And as we keep seeing ridership, it’s kind of justified the cost to experiment and add a second bus to kind of artificially add instead of a one hour wait, it’s a 30-minute wait,” Sims said.
The new addition has been receiving good feedback, which also triggered more change. GoBG said they also plan to add another bus to a popular route, and that the goal is to serve the community, one route, one ticket and one bus stop at a time.
“Wherever you’re in the city, either if you’re over there in Fort Webb, by Gordon Avenue or you’re all the way over there by Lovers Lane, you can hop on our bus, and you can get from one side of the city to the next,” he said.
GoBG are also planning to hire new bus drivers and CDL drivers for the new big buses they are getting.
