SOKY Alliance creates opportunities during Pride Month
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.- In 2022 a study done by the Trevor Project shows that 60% of the LGBTIQ youth in Kentucky contemplated suicide, and the local organization SOKY Alliance is building community and creating a supportive space right here in Bowling Green.
Creating a space for young people to be themselves is a part of what this safe space does it also recognizes the need for meaningful relationships.
Katii Tanaro, the chair of SOKY Alliance, tells us why there is a need for spaces like these. She says, “I’m sure we’re in Southern Kentucky. But that’s also, you know, part of the reason why we have to do this is to get, you know, awareness out there and to get the youth that we serve, you know, help.”
Katii also shares that “It gives our youth a sense of connection, whether that’s to themselves or whether that’s to the community. It just provides them opportunities to be part of something.”
This not only affects the child who goes through this, it also has a massive impact on their families.
One mom giver her perspective on SOKY Alliance and how it as impacted her. “It’s taken a lot of weight off of me because I’m seeing my child thrive and have friendships. It’s amazing to have a space where you can be who you are. it helps. I- My kid is just they’ve grown so much as a human,” says, Amy Colon.
The growth isn’t just stopping at the youth in SOKY Alliance. It will also flow into many other environments around the community.
Crystal Akers, the directors SOKY Alliance shares the power this organization has. Crystal says, “There’s always room and there’s always ways to improve your community, and I think this is just one of those ways.”
