Flooding safety tips before you hit the road

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – With the possibility of severe weather this weekend, we reached out to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to learn how motorists can stay safe.

Weather can be unpredictable, but when in doubt, it’s always best to use caution when a road is flooded.

This includes not taking down barriers or driving through them, because this decision could potentially turn dangerous.

“That happens a lot. People… they get impatient or they think they can drive through anyway, and that creates a lot of problems. We just ask that people do not do that… but also watch out for yourself. Just because we haven’t been out to be able to get a barricade up in time, doesn’t mean the road is not flooded,” Wes Watt of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says.

Experts say if a road is flooded, there is no way to know how deep the water is. That’s why it’s best to turn around and seek an alternate route.

If you see a flooded road without a barricade this weekend, reach out to your local law enforcement. This could save a life and help make the road safer for everyone.
