Gearing up for spring bee season

BARREN COUNTY, Ky.- In 2023, several beekeepers across the country lost 50% of their bee population, and this spring is crucial to the entire bee population. Re-populating will not only impact the bees, it will also impact the production of our flowers fruits and vegetables

Keith Kauffman, a beekeeper who experience a major loss of bees last year shares how important this season is for bees. Keith says, “This right now is an important time for bees because they are building themselves out for the rest of the year. Their long-term survival into next year is based on what goes on right now.”

Helping the bees pollinate does not require a lot. You can start by being proactive by planting a small garden or altering your mowing schedule. This is important because bees rely heavily on humans and we rely on them for many of their resources. The outcome of not helping the bees will do more harm than good.

Robert Whitlow a bee educator in Barren County tells us how bees and pollinating impacts us. Whitlow says, “A third of every item that we have to eat comes from bee pollination, so bees are super important in our whole ecosystem and it’s spring in the bee world because they are active now.”
