Beekeeping School hosted at Allen County-Scottsville High School

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Hundreds of beekeepers gathered in Scottsville on Saturday to learn more about their favorite subject.

Beginners to experience professionals were welcomed at the Allen County-Scottsville High School for classes, such as honey production, keeping the pollinators healthy and even cooking with honey.

Vendors displayed their latest beekeeping equipment, and the League of Arts and Crafts showcased their bee-themed works.

One doctor delivered the keynote address on bee breeding and told us why beekeeping is so important.

Jeff Harris, a beekeeping professor at Mississippi State, said they faced some dangerous mites introduced into the country that were not here before, which can make bees really sick.

“We also got a beetle that attacks our hives, and so it’s a lot harder to keep bees healthy,” Harris says. “And so, beekeepers helped do that.”

This 19th annual Beekeeping School was organized by the Allen County Beekeepers Association.

They encouraged anyone interested in pollinators, whether professionally or as a hobby, to seek out their closest association.

Many of the counties in our area have these groups, and your local extension service would be a good place to point you in the right direction.
