New Apple update to safeguard against thieves

(CNN) – Apple is working to protect personal data stored on your iPhone.

The company announced a major security update Monday that is now available for download.

“Stolen Device Protection” adds an extra layer of security by creating additional steps to access information.

You will be asked to use face or fingerprint scanning to access data or make changes, and for more sensitive actions, like changing an Apple ID password or turning off the Stolen Device Protection itself, you will have to scan your face or fingerprint, wait through an hour-long security delay, then re-scan your face or fingerprint.

You must have two-factor authentication and Find My enabled to use the feature.

It is only activated when you are away from a familiar location like work or home.
