Community Service Project provides bags with resources for refugee expecting and new mothers

BOWLING GREEN, KY.- Finding support as a refugee is not always easy, but thanks to Refuge BG a local non-profit organization. It’s getting a little easier for others to spread support to refugee mothers.

Refuge Bowling Green is partnering with the Chamber of Commerce Leadership BG to spread knowledge about refugees. They gave more than 70 refugee mothers support and resources for their babies they may not get anywhere else.

Abbie Booty, the Refuge Bowling Green specialist tells us where the passion for the project comes from. She says, “I love that we’re getting the opportunity to bring other people in the community in that process of helping other people because these people really do bring a lot of value into our community. It’s just about making that connection and fostering all of the potential that we have that sometimes gets pushed into the shadows. ”

This was more than filling bags with baby powder, diapers, and blankets. The volunteers left knowing more about refugees so they could do more to help them.

Cory Gearlds the president of Leadership Bowling Green shares the value of projects like these. Geralds says,  “It’s one of those situations, too, where a lot of the times you think, Man, this is going to be an amazing experience for them, but even just being a part of this, it’s a very humbling experience because not only are they gaining, but, you know, I learned so much.”

Many people have no idea what it’s like to enter a community and feel isolated because of barriers that aren’t easily broken, but small acts like these are making major impacts. This isn’t the one service Refuge Bowling Green Offers. They also offer driving classes, educational programs, and so much more. For more information visit https://www.facebook.com/RefugeBG.
