Winterize your pets? Make sure they’re warm!
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Even though they have fur, pets can get cold too, and it’s important to look out for them.
The Butler County Animal Shelter put out a post today on Facebook advising animal owners to take special care of their dogs and cats as we face colder days.
A shelter worker we spoke to said straw is the way to go for outside animals, not blankets. Makayla Lowe-Sikes said that blankets can get wet and actually freeze to the animal. Salt used to melt ice and snow can also burn your pet’s paws, so be sure to wash them after a walk, and just blocking the wind by doing things like putting up tarps can help greatly.
The shelter staffer also said don’t be afraid to put a coat on your dog if they have shorter hair, as animals have a hard time bouncing back from low temperatures.
