MAMMOTH CAVE, Ky. – Mammoth Cave National Park is asking the public to comment on an option to replace seasonal housing.

Mammoth Cave officials say seasonal housing used by park service staff, interns and volunteers is obsolete and is rapidly deteriorating. It’s normally used for the spring, summer and fall seasons, but the park says the housing is being used beyond its life.

The park says the buildings also are not meeting requirements for the Architectural Barriers Act and Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards, lack automatic fire support and do not comply with National Park Service quarters policy.

An Environmental Assessment will review a proposed plan to replace the housing with multiplex housing units with additional amenities, officials say.

The new units will provide indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, an outdoor pavilion, options for large item storage and parking for residents, the park says.

Full information on the proposed plan is on the Planning, Environment and Public Comment website.

Comments on the EA may be submitted here. Opinions will be gathered through Nov. 29.
