Group feeds Barren County’s hungry

GLASGOW, Ky. – A local church is partnering with Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland to provide free food to residents of Barren County.

Tuesday morning volunteers from Anthem, Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland and River Lake Church came out to give bags of produce to residents.

Map the Meal Gap shows that over 15% of adults and over 21% of children are food insecure in Barren County.

Over the past year, Feeding America has distributed over 280,000 meals in Barren County.

“I think this gives us a birds eye view of people in the community who are hungry and need help, and I think that’s what we are commissioned to do,” said volunteer Patrick Guance.

Today alone, 14,000 pounds of produce was distributed through Anthem’s partnership with the organization.

“At the end of the day, I think we are all in it together because I’ve been helped in my past. I’ve needed a helping hand. I grew up incredibly poor as a young person. So, I’ve been on the other side of that and know the impact when somebody takes time out of their day and says ‘hey, here you go,’ It’s a big, big deal,” said Nic Smith, lead pastor of River Lake Church.

These meal distributions occur at River Lake Church in Glasgow every third Tuesday of the month along with a distribution day in Cave City every third Thursday of the month.
