Crews still working to repair substation damage caused by copper thieves
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Crews were still working on a substation in Warren County Monday, where on Friday night, someone broke in and caused thousands of residents in the area to lose power for eight hours.
The Warren County Sheriff’s Office received a call about the power outage as well as a potential theft investigation.
At the scene, an investigator found that there had been a break in at one of the Warren RECC substations off of Carter Sims Road in Plano.
The responsible party broke in and took copper from the site, shutting off the electricity to over 3,000 nearby residents.
Sheriff Brett Hightower also reminded the public that the substations have warning signs for a reason.
“It’s extremely dangerous and there is no amount of money or gain that you could get for losing a life,” Hightower said.
Saturday was in the mid 90’s and those effected had to go to bed without air conditioning.
“They could have been killed themselves doing something like this, you’d think they’d have more smarts than this. I think they are jerks and they should be prosecuted for creating all the inconvenience for the customers,” said Plano resident Rockie Fish.
The sheriff’s office now has some new evidence that could help to identify the suspects as well.
