Woman turns personal tragedies into inspiration to help children
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Glasgow Police Department is serving the children of their community with goody bags donated by a local woman.
Officer Mason Wethington had the chance to give out four of the bags Monday that Donitta Tyler bought, assembled and donated.
Recently, she donated nearly 30 goody bags to Glasgow Police Department to give out to children they encounter in the community.
She said the Glasgow Police Department was special to her, because as a child, a domestic abuse situation left her mother in the hospital and father in custody, she was parent-less for Christmas, and the department acted as Santa Claus for her. She said she never forgot that.
Tyler has a passion for making children smile after she lost her two young grandsons nine years ago.
She finds deals from nearby stores and buys up sale toys, coloring books and stuffed animals and makes goody bags for children.
“I want to honor them. For the rest of my life I want to honor my grandsons, because they brought so much joy to my life. I did everything I could do to make them happy. Now that they’re gone, I try to make other kids happy,” Tyler said.
Glasgow police officers are thrilled to receive the thoughtful donation, and the department still has more goody bags to distribute.
Tyler also says she plans to continue making the goody bags.
