SNAP recipients to receive help for losing food due to Aug. 11 storms

SCOTTSVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients who lost food during the Aug. 11 storms may be eligible to have those benefits replaced.

The state is encouraging SNAP recipients to apply for replacement benefits if food they purchased with SNAP was lost because of storm damage, flooding, fire or a power outage.

Officials say recipients must meet certain requirements to qualify.

For those who lost food because of an outage, recipients will need documentation from their electric company showing they were without power for more than four hours.

“Typically, the SNAP recipient or the person that is receiving food stamps needs to report that loss within 10 days of the storm or the loss, and they must have purchased that food with food stamp benefits and be able to provide the food stamp office with an estimate or a description of the value of the loss of that food,” said Bobbie Esters, the benefits director for Kentucky Legal Aid.

You have until Aug. 31 to submit your requests to the Kentucky Cabinet of Health and Human Services.
